Designing Space

Designing Space (Dream School)

In the designing space project we started out by coming up with our dream school. Our dream school was whatever we thought a school should be like, how it should run, and elements that should be incorporated into it. After we came up with what our dream school would be, we wrote a description of it, and then chose 3 “non-negotiable’s”. A nonnegotiable is an element of your dream school that cannot be changed, and that you want to implement into the school. After we came up with our non-negotiable’s we wrote them down on cards turn them in and then got them back with our groups assigned. Then we met with other groups wrote down their non-negotiable’s, and wrote 10 ways that we could implement them into the school for each of their nonnegotiable list, and ours. After we came up with all 90 ways to implement their ideas we share them with each other, and then wrote them down on cards that got hung up around the room. Then we chose one idea to actually implement into the school. After we chose the idea, we chose a way to implement it. After that we began to write proposals for the idea. The proposals contained what we wanted to do, how we would do it, what supplies you need, we need to talk to, and where and when would happen. After we wrote the proposals we got together with another group, and shared everyone proposal to get critique on how we can make them better. After we got the critique we adjusted them and added more. We then begin to finalize our proposals and to start build our prototypes. Then the teachers critiqued our proposals. We worked on our prototypes, and then had a prototype gallery walk with another team. We got critique on all of our prototypes and adjusted them to make them better. Then we finalize our prototypes, and presented our proposals to the class. Along the way our group created a keynote and presented our idea to Mr. Gooch.

My Initial Proposals:

The First one (do lots of projects) is my dream school element and nonnegotiable, but I focused all my effort on the second one Vending Machine because I will be working on the exhibition later it the year.

Do lots of projects:

We need to know what type of projects that the students want to do by asking them or taking a survey, if the project is a team project or a group project, and if the project is large or small/involves building or crafting/brainstorming and working.
The resources that we will need are projects supplies depending on the project, wood, duct tape, glue, paint, power tools, computers for research, paper, staples, markers, and screws/nails.
We will need to talk to the teachers about what projects we will be doing, other students, parents for supplying materials, and professionals if we want to go into more detail and learn more in depth content about the subject.

Have a huge exhibition with lots of different projects incorporated

Important characteristics of having a huge exhibition with lots of projects incorporated are to make exhibition more fun, to teach people about what we are learning, and to make our exhibition better than the rest of the school.
Students are involved and affected because it is their projects and work coming together to create the exhibition. Teacher are involved and affected because they are helping the students and supplying materials for them to use.
As the students our goals for the exhibition is to create beautiful work that exceeds people's expectations and to have the best exhibition in the school. What we want to see happen is different people coming together to collaborate in ways that they have not already and produce amazing projects.
This would take place in our classrooms/outside of our classrooms.
This would happen on December 20, 2012.
We could make this happen by preparing and working very hard on setting exhibition up and creating exceptional work.
The steps we would take would be, choose a topic, brainstorm ideas, get into groups, prototype ideas, critique work, revise, begin creating, setup room, and then present our work.

The critique that I got for this one was minimal, I only got one suggestion to invite other schools to come and see our exhibition witch I think is a very good idea.

Snack Stands:

We need to know what type of snack the other students like, we also need to know how we can build the vending machine, as well as who is going to fill it with snacks.
The resources that we will need are, wood, springs, snacks/candy, dowels, wooden knob, screws, glue, string, and tools.
We will need to talk to the teachers about creating the vending machine, and the students about what they want in it.

Vending Machine:

Students will be involved with this because they will be helping to build it, and teachers will be involved because they will be supplying materials.
Students will be affected by this because they will be getting free, or paid for, snacks.
We want to see the vending machine working and in the classroom.
Our goals are to make a working vending machine for student and teacher that looks good.
This would take place in class.
This will happen in the future sometime.
The steps we would take are, having a rough sketch, prototype, critique, revisions,  create, finalize, and display.

No critique.

Bought Vending Machine:

Some students will be involved with this because they will be investing money into the vending machine to help pay for and stock it, and parents will be involved because they will be picking up the food from the store.
Students will be affected by this because they will be able to get snacks from the vending machine and the students who paid for it will be helping to maintain it.
We want to see the vending machine in the school supplying food to the students and faculty members.
Our goals are to gather $650 dollars and purchase a vending machine to put in the school.
This would take place after school to pick it up and in school to maintain it.
This will happen in as soon as we get permission from the school and the money from the students.
The steps we would take are, find a vending machine, gathering the money, propose the idea, get it approved, buy it, stock it, put it in the high school, and then maintain it from there.

No critique.

What worked well for me in this project was really just the overall project. It was a really fun project and I collaborated with some people that I work well with and some people that I've never worked with before. during the project I was able to get all my ideas out and we are able to use everyone's idea in our project and we are also able to present to Mr. Gooch.  There were not very many challenges throughout the project. the only challenges were getting our prototype to function properly, particularly our numerical sensor and servo motor, and trying to get idea approved by Mr. Gooch. and I are to do the project over again I would probably change some of my non-negotiables, because they're very similar to high-tech. Overall I thought the project was really fun, it was interesting to see what other people's dream schools would be as well as to help them make their dreams come true.

The questions that we received from our presentation were things like:

what kind of food will be in the vending machine

How much money do you think the machine will make

Our Keynote it in the link to the right.
