Design Thinking: The Backpack

We all had to think about the one thing that just about everyone of us used every day. The backpack. Central students, we all carry some sort of bag or backpack, and a lot of people just except the regular backpack or bag and use it. However, there are a lot of problems with the models that they have today so what our project was was that we had to think about the things that we did not like and fix them, redesign the backpack.

In my group, what we started by doing was just thinking about what we did and did not like about the backpacks that we currently have. From that we are able to compose a list of good things, a list of bad things, and a list of things that we really wanted to change. We wrote it all down on a piece of paper and then we all just started brainstorming and thinking of how we can change the different aspects, and different approaches to problems. This first step (on right) helped us to identify the problems, and help us start to find solutions.

After we came up with all those initial ideas my group started to narrow down the problems that we wanted to solve, and start some more detailed sketches. The drawings on the left are ones that I did of how I envisioned the backpack to look, and some different ways that we could approach things that we wanted to solve.

The things that we narrowed down that we wanted to fix were: fix the weight distribution, fix the straps, simplify the design, add a place to write, change the interior storage capabilities, (and later added) add a solar panel.

Once we figured out the different things that we wanted, I went in to a three dimensional animation program that I use, I started to construct our ideas in three dimensions. Scattered throughout the page are some examples of the 3-D renderings that I did. This helped us to visualize exactly how are backpack would look in three dimensions, as well as the different features on it such as the solar panel, the table, and the general layout.

Once I finished creating the models and texturing them, I began to lay them out in different scenes. This helped us to visualize how it look in the different environments that it could be used in, for example the one to the left was rendered because somebody suggested that we show how the backpack looks in a campsite do the fact that we spoke about its use during camping.

The following images include different aspects of the backpack in different environments such as the school.
