The Battle Of Berlin

For our exhibition, we studied WWII. Our overall projects was a preformance of the legacy of WWII and every group chose an event and created a vignette that portrayed this event. Our group did the Battle of Berlin and created a film that follows a soviet soilder as he enters battle.

In the final month of the long bloody European Front of WWII, the Soviet army swept through the streets of the city of Berlin. Berlin was in ruins at this time from Allied bombings. The German army that remained was severely weakened. Hitler was willing to take all that he could get, yet at this point in the war it was obvious who would emerge victorious. Stalin’s method, as usual, was to push all possible force into the battle. All troops were to show no mercy to the German military and all those left to defend the city. Stalin always planned to split Berlin with the Allies, yet he still had the political motives to reach Berlin. He wanted to show the Allies that the Soviets had emerged as a world power using a war economy to boost their focus and industry. The notorious capture of the iconic Reichstag by Soviet forces was finalized on May 2nd, 1945. The total losses in the battle number around four hundred thousand. The Soviets celebrated their victory on the ninth of May, whilst the allies had celebrated the victory on the eighth of May.
Meanwhile during the final days of this event Hitler sat in his famous bunker, Führerbunker, near the Reichstag. From here he watched as he gave up all hope of control over his former military power. Again we must recognize the fact that he was taking all he could get into his military ranks. In the final days of the European front of WWII, Hitler committed suicide, most likely by a gun, along with his dog, and his new wife Eva Braun in the presence of his body guards.
In the months leading up to the Soviet offensive attack on the German Capital city, Joseph Stalin and the Politburo kept in close contact with the commanding officers on the front, most notably, Marshall Zhukov, who was a very successful military leader. Both men agreed to show no mercy to the Germans, and to fight with all possible strength that the Soviet army could muster. A final defensive point for the German military was Seelow Heights. The Nazis used the cover of the terrain and trees to hide tanks from Soviet soldiers. The Soviets pressed on and were able to crush the Nazis by showing no mercy.

World War Two

Our class spoke to Lenard Grey to hear about his experience in the second world war. When Leonard was 16 he the war was very intense, he explained about how he wanted to join the military but his cousin convinced him to steer away from the army and to join the navy. One day he was out and it was raining when he stubbled into a recruitment office and enlisted into the navy. After that he was sent for examination and compared to many other people, as the examination continued he as well as seven others were picked out and sent to one side of the room and told that they were going to be going to heaven on earth, San Diego, while the others would be going somewhere where it was so cold that they could easily freeze to death. We heard all about his impressions of San Diego and how it was, and then he told us about how when he boarded the ship he was going on he accidentally dropped his bag of all of his supplies off the edge of the boat and down into the water. After that he began working on the communication center, radio shack, of the boat and recording morose code. He continued about how they would sweep for mines and their invasion where every marine who went ashore was killed by the Japanese in moments. He also spoke about how the mail would be delivered by being dumped on an island, and how he enjoyed shooting down the planes that would wake everyone up in the middle of the night. After he talked about his experience on the boat he spoke about when he got back to the USA and how he got married and where he lived/how he moved to California. I really enjoyed hearing about his experience in WWII and all the stories that went along with it.
